The 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia is scheduled to be open from 22 May to 21 November 2021. The exhibition of the Pavilion of Finland, commissioned by Archinfo Finland, is curated by Laura Berger, Philip Tidwell and Kristo Vesikansa, a Finnish-American trio of Aalto University scholars. New Standards revisits a moment of history when architects and industry came together to address the urgent question of resettling Karelian refugees. Puutalo Oy’s new approaches to pre-fabricated housing not only modernised Finland’s construction industry but also became a worldwide export, helping to establish Finland’s international reputation for architecture and wood production. Archinfo Finland acts now for the second time as Commissioner of the Pavilion of Finland, appointed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, Finland. The concept for the 2020 exhibition was chosen through an open call, and the concept was announced in December 2019.
The Museum of Finnish Architecture, Sweden’s National Centre for Architecture and Design ArkDes and The National Museum of Norway jointly commission the exhibition of the Nordic Pavilion. In 2020, Norway takes the lead in producing the exhibition, curated by Martin Braathen. The exhibition What we share presents a Nordic example of democracy, communal housing and sustainable wood architecture, designed by Helen&Hard Architects.
The International Architecture Exhibition has been organised in Venice since 1980. It alternates with the International Art Exhibition, which was established in 1895. The architecture exhibition has developed into the most esteemed international arena for showcasing architecture, with 275,000 visitors in 2018.
