The cinematic essay by Nico Weber is built as a non-linear composition rather than a conventional storyline. History becomes present, architecture becomes body, the archive becomes a question, and the construction site becomes form.
How can we understand the significance of the Bauhaus school today? Director Nico Weber’s cinematic essay bauhaus forever. approaches the question through space and materiality. At the core of the film, the Bauhaus, architecture and the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung Berlin are not the film's subjects to be explained; they function as a testing ground for perception, memory, institutions and the afterlife of a radical idea. The listed existing building is currently being restored, while a new museum extension is under construction alongside it, offering the filmmaker and archive staff an opportunity to reflect on the significance of Bauhaus and its living legacy.
Weber emphasises that Bauhaus was above all a holistic idea. This raises the question of how the Bauhaus’s 20th-century ambition to shape society through artistic experimentation can be kept alive in today’s political climate.
Nico Weber will be a guest at Espoo Ciné and will attend the screening of the film on 28 August.
