Gender equality and non-discrimination plan

This Gender equality and non-discrimination plan, updated on 17 June 2025, guides the operations of Archinfo, the Information Centre for Finnish Architecture. The plan has been prepared by Archinfo’s staff and director.

Archinfo is committed to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of its work. This Gender equality and non-discrimination plan applies to staff, stakeholders, and Archinfo’s audience.

The plan is based on Finland’s Non-Discrimination Act (1325/2014) and Act on Equality between Women and Men (609/1986), and interprets equality as the fundamental right of every person to be treated equally and with respect.

Archinfo commits to:

  1. Treating all individuals equally regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, language, beliefs, sexual orientation, ability, or other personal characteristics.
  2. Actively dismantling structural inequalities within the Finnish architecture sector.
  3. Promoting diversity across professional networks, partnerships, events, and communications.

Staff and workplace culture

Archinfo strives to ensure a fair, inclusive, and supportive work environment. The organisation’s small size allows for low hierarchy, open communication, and flexibility in addressing individual needs.

Archinfo applies a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of workplace discrimination, harassment, or inappropriate behaviour.

Recruitment processes emphasise fairness and non-discrimination, with gender-neutral language and anonymised applications when possible.

Wellbeing is supported through regular staff dialogues and surveys addressing inclusion, safety, and recognition.

Employees are engaged in planning and monitoring equality goals in collaboration with Archinfo’s Board.

Accessibility

As a national information centre, Archinfo prioritises accessibility and inclusivity in all communication and event production.

Online content is produced in line with the EU Accessibility Directive. Clear language is prioritised, with most content available in both Finnish and English. Subtitles and text alternatives are provided for video and audio content where appropriate.

Events are designed to be physically accessible, with venue choices considering wheelchair access, accessible restrooms, and barrier-free entry.

Participants are encouraged to communicate any specific needs when registering for events.

Archinfo continuously evaluates accessibility and uses feedback to improve its practices.

Diversity

Archinfo recognises that the Finnish architecture field has historically lacked diversity. Strengthening diversity is a key societal mission embedded in the organisation’s communications, programming, and partnerships.

The organisation actively works to challenge stereotypical representations of architecture and its professionals.

Content created by Archinfo (articles, exhibitions, seminars, videos) aims to reflect a broad and inclusive view of architecture and bring forth different age groups, genders, cultural backgrounds, regions, and identities.

Archinfo partners with organisations, networks, and educational institutions that promote the participation of underrepresented groups in architecture and the built environment.

Archinfo supports initiatives that reduce barriers to architectural education and discourse.

Monitoring and development

Archinfo’s staff monitors the implementation of the Equality and non-discrimination plan on a monthly basis during office meetings, and the plan is reviewed annually in collaboration with key stakeholders. The Board, together with the staff, updates the plan as needed.
