As part of the "International Architecture" programme of the Order of Architects of Palermo, Finnish architects Mikki Ristola (AOR Architects) and Mikko Pohjaranta (UKI Architects) discuss recently completed Finnish projects for education: schools, university campuses and libraries designed with sustainability, flexibility and inclusivity in mind.

The conference is part of "International Architecture," a programme promoted by the Order of Architects of Palermo and its Foundation to mark the 100th anniversary of the Order. Curated by architect Arianna Callocchia, it is the second in a cycle of meetings created to foster dialogue and professional exchange between the Italian and international architecture scenes.

The talk highlights the importance Finland places on sustainability in architecture, and how the example set by Helsinki can serve as inspiration for Palermo. Finland's high-quality education system and its long-standing commitment to solidarity and sustainability place architecture at the centre of public life — for Finnish architects, designing well for education and learning is a way of bringing well-being to communities while safeguarding the planet for future generations.

Finnish architects Mikki Ristola (AOR Architects) and Mikko Pohjaranta (UKI Architects) will present a selection of recently completed Finnish schools, university buildings and libraries, chosen for their sustainable approach and their attention to flexible, multifunctional and inclusive spaces that respect both people and the environment. Among the projects discussed is the renovation of the historic Rovaniemi Main Library, originally designed in 1965 by Alvar Aalto.

The talks will be held in Italian and English.

Line-up
  • Giuseppina Leone, President of the Order of Architects of Palermo;
  • Lina Bellanca, President of the Foundation of the Order of Architects of Palermo

Moderated by Gaia Girgenti, Secretary and Council Member of the Order of Architects of Palermo and by Lucia Pierro, Council Member of the Order of Architects of Palermo, both members of the Executive Board of the Foundation of the Order of Architects of Palermo.

The conference is organised with the patronage of ATL – The Association of Finnish Architects' Offices and the Embassy of Finland in Italy.
