Modern Metro: Steel, Colors, and the Disappearing Infrastructure Architecture

DSC 0001

Welcome to a small exhibition that offers a moment to reflect on the legacy of Helsinki’s metro – especially through the example of Herttoniemi Station.

The steel pavilions at Herttoniemi represent the system-based architecture of the late 1970s and early 1980s, as well as the everyday built environment of metro stations. In light of ongoing and upcoming renovations, it is time to reconsider the vanishing system architecture of the metro – and the often overlooked design of its infrastructural surroundings. For over 40 years, the metro has shaped Helsinki’s identity and everyday landscape. Can we see this legacy in a new light – examine it more consciously and sensitively?

The exhibition is located on the platform level of Herttoniemi Metro Station, near Entrance C, where passersby can view the displays or explore the original architecture of the station and beyond via the metro itself. On display are photographs examining the architecture and interiors of the metro, as well as scale models highlighting the structural form and rhythm of Herttoniemi Station. Texts and images are collected in a small publication available at the site.

The exhibition and research material have been compiled by architect Karita Rytivaara, who is also responsible for the photographs and models. The accompanying publication includes texts by interior architect Jussi Laine, architect and doctoral researcher Merete Kemppainen, and architect Olli Nieminen. The graphic design is by Kaarina Tammisto. The project is supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
