Resilient Futures: How can we build within planetary boundaries?

A view from sea to a city with buildings and industrial sites.

Tapio Haaja

The Hanaholmen programme series, Dialogues for Our Futures, will next take a look at the environmental impact of construction.

The environmental impact of construction is significant: the industry generates 40% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, and natural resources are used extensively to create new buildings. At the same time, the demolition of old buildings increases the amount of waste.

Renovation and utilization of the existing building stock are ways to reduce environmental impact and extend the life cycle of buildings. Therefore, they should be seen as a resilient resource to meet the planetary boundaries.

What role does the built environment play in strengthening the overall resilience of society?

What kind of changes in attitudes and decision making are required to make the built environment compatible within planetary boundaries?

What potential does renovation have for ecological and cultural sustainability?

The event will be held in English. Read more and register here.
