The public kickoff symposium of the Aalto ARTS Summer School 2025 showcases critical perspectives on a paradigm shift toward sustainable practices, values, and thinking concerning the built environment. Speakers include the curators of the Finnish Pavilion, architects Ella Kaira and Matti Jänkälä.

New construction and demolition are among the world’s most significant contributors to carbon emissions, the use of energy and natural resources, waste generation, and biodiversity loss. There is an urgent need to address spatial needs in more sustainable ways. Yet, this calls for a fundamental paradigm shift in values, thinking, and practices surrounding the built environment. How can we achieve such a paradigm shift? What kinds of spatial practices would enable humankind to fit within the planetary boundaries?

The symposium features speakers from international partner schools of the Summer School, including Jeremy Till, İdil Gaziulusoy, Matti Jänkälä & Ella Kaira, Cynthia Wei Deng & Elif Erez-Henderson, and Jeongki Lim. The event is moderated by Hella Hernberg and Panu Savolainen, the academic leaders of the Summer School.
