Symposium: Nordic House in the Faroe Islands 40 years

A one story modern building with big windows and a roof overlaid with grass in an open field.

The symposium concentrates on the Nordic House, the history of the Faroe Islands, and Nordic cooperation.

The Nordic House in the Faroe Islands celebrated 40 years last May. The house is the largest cultural producer in the Faroe Islands and plays an important role both in the cultural life of the Faroe Islands and for Nordic cultural cooperation in general.

Programme

09:00–12:00 
Introductory lecture about the Faroe Islands’ history, culture and building customs and how the house is used today. Norwegian architects Ola Steen and Kolbrún Ragnarsdóttir, who won the house's design competition in 1977, will contribute with some introductory comments.

12:00–13:00 
Lunch

13:00–17:00
Short comments about the house by architects from Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. All the architect organisations from these countries have reported participation in the symposium.

Accommodation and prices

Accommodation is reserved in two hotels: Hotel Hafnia, which is located in the town center some two kilometers from the Nordic House, and Hotel Brandan just 800 meters form the venue. Good bus connections to and from both hotels. 

Prices (in Danish krone):
Hotel Hafnia single room DKK 5,550, double room DKK 4,600
Hotel Brandan single room DKK 5,250, double room DKK 4,450

Accommodation is limited to 40 people. 

The participants plan and pay for their own travel to and from Torshavn. 

Symposium fee:
The registration fee is estimated at DKK 2,700

Register your interest with hotel preference before 22 March. 50% is paid upon final registration before 1 June. After 1 June there will be no refunding. The total amount of money must be paid by 15 August.

As additional programme, a four-hour tour with an English-speaking interpreter is planned on Thursday 19 September from 10 am to 2 pm, to visit the historic Kirkjubøur village and the oldest part of Tórshavn, Tinganes, as well as modern architecture in the centre of Tórshavn. 

Tour fee:
The tour fee is estimated at DKK 300
