Village Works is an international design-build workshop exploring adaptive reuse, material resilience and collaborative making through architecture.
This summer, participants will continue the transformation of the former foundry building Valimo in Fiskars. The workshop develops and constructs architectural interventions that test the building’s multiple forms of use. At the same time, it reflects on how post-industrial environments can evolve towards practices of care, maintenance and stewardship.
Design research, prototyping, material experimentation and hands-on construction are used as tools for exploring new ideas and solutions. The course brings together architecture, furniture design and craft. Participants will collaborate directly with local carpenters and craftspeople. The programme also includes visits to workshops in the area, introducing woodworking practices and Fiskars’ strong tradition in craft and design.
The workshop tutors are architect Taneli Mansikkamäki (AA Diploma Unit 9 / Experimental Properties), designer and carpenter Atte Pylvänäinen, and artist and craftsperson Daniel Swarilov.
The AA Visiting School and the workshop’s specific application criteria can be found here. The application can be filled out using this link.
