The Oulu School of Architecture exhibition revisits the unconventional regional attitude on architecture that emerged in the 1970s in Oulu. The postmodern movement is examined through the lens of the 2020s.

Movements can fade but ideas remain!

The exhibition examines the unconventional attitude towards architecture that emerged among young architects in Oulu and architecture students at Oulu University in the late 1970s. Oulu School of Architecture, organised as part of the Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture year programme, is a co-production by Proto – Designers of Northern Finland and SAFA (Association of Finnish Architects) in North Finland.

Oulu School of Architecture follows the movement from early years with the heated debate between architects in the north and the modernist elite in the south until the 2020s when concerns regarding mitigating climate change and renovation, including who can decide what is valuable, have replaced the early topics related to regionalism.
