An exhibition on the built environment that examines a city built through demolition, using a site-specific installation reflecting the current state of the commercial building on Kasarmitori against the stages of its history.
OMEN space's exhibition tells the story of Memora, a city built through demolition, traced by the working group together with their guest curator, architect Karita Rytivaara. The working group also includes graphic designer Päivi Helander, interior architect Jussi Laine and architect Maria Klemetti Laine. The exhibition reflects the current state of the commercial building on Kasarmitori against the stages of its history through a site-specific installation. It examines how we should respond to a modern building slated for demolition, and what is lost from a city's remembrance and memory when it is demolished.
The exhibition's themes are explored with expert guests in the Unconstructive Conversations discussion series on 23 and 30 September. Check out the discussions on the Archinfo website here. The discussions examine demolition from the perspective of built heritage and the disappearance of urban history and its layers, as well as from perspectives of multispecies coexistence and economic value. What do we lose when the layers of modern architecture are erased, and who decides what is worth preserving?
The same space also houses OMEN materials, an extensive material library for construction and interior design. The curated collection of material samples can be experienced, examined, combined and borrowed at the library. In addition to the material selection from partner organisations, the collection includes basic materials for sustainable construction, circular economy materials and material innovations.
The exhibition and material library are open Wed–Thu 11am–6pm, Sat 12–4pm, and by appointment upon request.
